When A Cork Dart Board May Be The Best Choice, And When To Avoid Them
A cork dart board has one advantage over the other materials – it is cheap. If you are looking to give darts a try, but are not sure whether you want to make a long term commitment, cork allows you to try the sport out with minimal risk. If you are going to stick with the game, you would be better off investing in a bristle board, as these are 'self-healing', and will wear much better. A cork dart board will begin to show wear after quite a short time as it is endlessly pierced by darts. The holes do not repair, and therefore a cork board will have a relatively short lifespan.
Darts is a great sport to get your family involved in. It can provide hours of pleasure for a very limited outlay, it can teach your children valuable math skills, and it gives people the chance to practice even when they are alone. Darts is one of the few sports which affords this ability. Usually you either need a practice partner or group, or else you need some sophisticated equipment. Not so with darts. Someone on their own can throw darts at a board in very much the same conditions as you would in top class competitive darts. The only major differences are the noise level and the temperature.
If you want to get involved in darts by installing equipment in your own home, you have some choices to make. The choice of which board to buy will be the most important of all. The first consideration is whether you want to buy a traditional board or an electronic one. The electronic board allows you play the same game of darts, but it has a greater degree of safety. It can also be cheaper. Although the board itself will be more expensive, there will be less need to build wooden surrounds to prevent damage to furniture and plaster.
If you want a traditional board, you will need to build in the necessary safety precautions. This may not be a cheap or easy job, depending on your circumstances. You will then have to decide on the material of the board. Cork dart boards are traditional, and were used for many years as standard. They do have the disadvantage of wearing out quicker than the modern boards which are made of sisal. With a sisal dart board, the dart enters the board in between the fibers, meaning that the dart board will return to its former state when the dart is removed.
With a cork dart board, the dart actually penetrates the surface, and leaves a permanent hole. This inevitable means that the life of a cork dart board is limited. You can extend this life considerably by rotating the board at regular intervals, so that the most used segment is actually a different part of the board. To be honest, a sisal board is a better choice, but if you are just looking to try darts, or will play it very infrequently, there is no harm in getting a cheap cork dart board.
